Chatham and 100 Years in the Cape Cod Baseball League

Mike Richard will touch on the early history of baseball on Cape Cod dating back to the 1800s, and the beginning of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 1923 (of which Chatham was among the four original teams).  He will discuss the 8 former Cape League players who made it to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, mention some of the outstanding baseball players of the past who began on the Cape and went on to star in the pros, and also cover some unique and interesting facts about the Chatham A’s and Anglers over the years. At the end of the lecture, there will be a baseball trivia quiz on former Chatham players who later starred in Major League Baseball.

Mike Richard has been the historian of the Cape Cod Baseball League since 2018. He spent 35 years in public education, both as an English teacher and later a guidance counselor before retiring from Gardner High School in 2013. A longtime columnist for The Gardner News, he also wrote sports columns for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, the Barnstable Patriot and the Cape Cod Times. He has authored two sports books: “Glory to Gardner: 100 Years of Football in the Chair City” and “Super Saturdays: The Complete History of the Massachusetts High School Super Bowl,” and is co-editor for the upcoming book on the history of the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Society of American Baseball Research. He also serves as historian of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and is responsible for all records and statistics for the annual state tournament programs. He and his wife Peggy relocated from Central Mass. to Sandwich on Cape Cod in 2013. They are the parents of two grown children, Casey and Lindsey, two grandchildren, Theo and Grace.
