Exterior view of the Atwood House in Summer

The paintings collection consists of approximately 300 oils, watercolors, drawings and other media. Most are late 19th and early 20th century. The portrait of Captain Joseph Atwood c. 1811 by an unknown artist is probably the earliest. Murals and other work by Alice Stallknecht (1880-1973) number about 80 objects and are the most by a single individual. Next largest is the work of Alice Stallknecht’s son, Frederick Wight (1902-86). The Society’s holdings are the biggest and most significant museum collection by either artist. There are also a number of good examples by Wendell Rogers (1890-1973), Harold Dunbar (1882-1953), Harold Brett (1880-1956) and other Cape painters.
