Speaker: Gary Childs

IN PERSON LECTURE

Gary Childs will be discussing the evolution of Race Point Lighthouse from 1816, onward. From the lighthouse’s incipience and initial deed, it prospered under many names and functions until it changed operations and became an automated station in 1972. It was at this point that the live keepers at the lighthouse were discontinued, although the lighthouse was still available for public view. The lighthouse underwent further restorations in 1995 by the American Lighthouse Foundation. It was not until volunteers completed the restoration in 1998, that the lighthouse became open for overnight stay. Within the 21st century, the lighthouse has been a beneficiary of numerous conservation projects as well as served educational purposes for local schools and institutions. It remains a staple within its community that Gary Childs cannot wait to discuss with his audience.
